BCGNY
The Borzoi Club of Greater New York was formed in February of 1969 just prior to the Westminster Kennel Club Show in a hotel across the street from the old Madison Square Garden.
The original name, Metropolitan Borzoi Club, was first switched to Metropolitan Borzoi Association, but by the end of the year assumed its present name, more reflective of the area it serves. The first president was Lena Tamboer, and the Club's logo was designed by Karen Staudt-Cartabona.
Specialty Shows
Our first Match Show was held in June 1969, with obedience added the following January. The first Specialty was held in conjunction with the New Brunswick Kennel Club in September 1972. Our first Independent Specialty was held April 24, 1974 in Paramus, NJ.
Our Spring Specialty has become a major annual event, held at a variety of locations, most notably at the Tolstoy Foundation in Valley Cottage, NY, with Countess Alexandra Tolstoy herself in attendance. The year 1998, the 25th anniversary of our Spring Specialty, saw BCGNY's first Independent Fall Specialty.
BCGNY now regularly holds two Specialty Shows each year Spring and Fall. Conformation, Sweepstakes and Obedience competitions are offered. Our Luvimyi Druk (Beloved Friend) Class is a special feature of our Spring Specialties, providing an opportunity for rescue, companion and retired hounds to be recognized and honored.
